FAQs

How long has Aikido Del Mar been established?

We’ve been serving the San Diego community since 2008. The practice started near Del Mar, CA. We moved to Torrey Highlands in 2020. Our new space is open and spacious, with good ventilation, making it conducive for a safe and comfortable training environment.

Who is the head instructor at Aikido Del Mar?

Kevin Pickard sensei is co-founder and head instructor. He has studied Aikido in Japan and North America for more than 30 years. He is an internationally certified instructor and is ranked Rokudan (6th degree black belt). Besides teaching martial arts, Kevin sensei is a strong proponent of a healthy mind and body. He frequently hosts meditation sessions and incorporates mindfulness to the training.

How is Aikido different from other martial arts?

The focus in Aikido is on neutralizing aggression instead of combating it head-on with muscle strength. We use circular, graceful movements to redirect aggressive energy and to defuse harmful situations. Aikido employs a keen understanding of body movements, physics, and biomechanics. Since Aikido relies on technique rather than muscle mass, it is practiced by all people around the world, including women, children, and seniors. Aikido is a beautiful and powerful martial art capable of easing our fears and bringing us strength and confidence. Many students report the path of Aikido serves as guidance in their everyday life.

What makes Del Mar Aikido unique?

We believe in fostering a positive and inclusive environment, free from judgment. Aikido is practiced with an open mind, in a spirit of respect for each other. Therefore, it is customary for senior students to serve as mentors to younger students. Our doors are open to Aikido practitioners from diverse schools. While we focus on Yoshinkan Aikido, all variations of Aikido (such as Aikikai) are respected and encouraged.

How does being a non-profit organization affect training?

Our mission is to make the art of Aikido available to the community. Our organization is run by dedicated volunteers who are passionate about creating a safe space for all people. When you train with us, you’ll feel genuine support.

I haven’t worked out in awhile. Is Aikido For Me?

Aikido is a non-aggressive form of martial art and, when practiced properly, a safe way to gain agility and improve physical fitness. If you have concerns, please discuss them with your instructors. Techniques are taught in steps, making it easy to follow along at your comfort level. There is never judgement—Only compassion and encouragement.

How often are belts awarded?

Belt testing usually occurs every 3 months. However students must be deemed ready and be invited. It’s important that students develop mastery at each level. Therefore, we focus on encouraging students to do their best, rather than focus on belt levels.

Do you participate in competitive tournaments?

No. There are never competitions or tournaments in Aikido. Instead we participate in retreats and activities that facilitate team-building, and cooperation among members and the community.

What types of classes do you offer?

We offer general classes for all levels as well as specialized classes for kids, women, and black belt holders.
